Biological Impedance Analysis (BIA)
The purpose of this lab is for students to develop skills for taking Biological Impedance Analysis (BIA) measurements to determine body composition.
BIA Tools & Systems
Tanita BIA Scales
- The Tanita body composition scale provides an indication of your body type by comparing measurements of your muscle mass and body fat
- Cost: starting at $3,500.00
- 2 Options: Athletic & Standard Body Composition
RJL System
- The RJL system is a portable instrument standard for assessing whole body composition including fat, lean body mass, total body water and basal metabolic rate. It is registered with the FDA as a Class II medical device.
- Cost: $2,500.00
- Computer system (Body Composition) that can store client assessment files
BodyStat
- Bodystat measures nutritional status, fat-free mass, body fat and fluid shifts inside the body, non-invasively. Measurements are quick, require little or no training. Comparable to gold standards, the device is affordable, hand-held and portable
- Cost: $1,500.00
Omron Handheld BIA
- This body fat monitor keeps track of your body fat percentage and Body Mass Index (BMI).
- Has an athlete and normal mode
- Cost: $100.00 – $150.00
InBody 570
- InBody570 is a bioelectrical impedance analysis scale that uses 15 impedance measurements, which consists of 3 frequencies at each of the 5 segements of the body (right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg, and left leg). This machine analyzes how much fat and muscle you have, while also measuring your Total Body Water. This total body water is further divided into Intracellular Water and Extracellular Water. Unlike many of the other tools that are explored in this course this body composition analyzer uses only impedance to determine body composition and does not rely on empirical equations to predict body composition.
- Cost: starting at $4,000
General Techniques and Guidelines
Key Takeaways:
For the most accurate BIA results, ensure that your client follows the following guidelines:
- No eating or drinking within 4 hours of the test
- No exercise within 12 hours of the test
- No alcohol or caffeine consumption within 24 hours of the test
- If your client is pregnant or has a pacemaker they are NOT to complete the BIA assessments
- Wipe off all scales and massage tables before and after each use.
- Clients remove all metal jewelry before conducting these assessments.
- When using the RJL system or BodyStat, electrodes are placed on the hand and foot on the right side of the client’s body.
- BIA leads do not cross the body – otherwise electrical interference could corrupt results.
