Program Learning Resources and Facilities
Attendance
Attendance to weekly virtual check-in session is not mandatory. Attending the weekly virtual check-in session is highly recommended as it is a great way to communicate with professor and peers, however, students will NOT be evaluated based on their attendance.
Attire and Equipment
Students are NOT required to purchase uniform or tool kit for the online Baking Skills program.
Netiquette
Netiquette is required of students participating in the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) online learning environments. Netiquette guidelines are a set of rules that dictate what acceptable online behaviour is. Students will be expected to follow policy in communicating with fellow students and faculty respectfully and professionally without taking part in disrespectful actions or communications at any time.
- Be respectful. It is important to remember that your fellow students and faculty are real people affected by the words you say and write. It is essential to keep in mind others’ feelings and opinions, even if they differ from your own. Please see further details in Centennial College’s Student Code of Conduct.
- Be aware of strong language, all caps, and exclamation points. It is easy for written text to be misread and misunderstood. By being cognizant of strong language, you can identify potential confusion before sending messages.
- Be careful with humour and sarcasm. Make sure that communications have clarity and that humour is respectful. Emoticons and smileys can be helpful when conveying humour or sarcasm, although misinterpreted easily in an online learning environment.
- Do not post or share (even privately) communication or pictures without the author or individuals’ consent. Please note it is prohibited to share information, materials, or communications without author or individual consent depicted in materials. Please remember that nothing is truly private when shared in an online environment. The student must always gain permission from their instructor before sharing. Please see Centennial College’s Code of Conduct for additional policies.
- Demonstrate Empathy and Understanding. Remember to demonstrate empathy and understanding when communicating with others in an online environment. Note that we are all different and bring values, ideas, and beliefs into the learning environment. Be understanding of others when they struggle with written communication. It is very different than simply talking to a person face-to-face.
- Participating in online discussions and lectures. The student will minimize background noise or interference and avoid any disruptions to the online learning environment. All recording devices are to be turned off during online discussions, demonstrations, and scheduled class time. Students who wish to record during the scheduled class require prior consent from the faculty.
Software
Students have access to industry-leading software packages and bundles that can be found in rooms, labs, and podiums across our campuses. Computers at each campus will be loaded with the applications for use in your courses. To access these features, you must log in to the network using your student number. You can see a comprehensive list of software and software packages installed by room and by campus here.

Instructors may make course readings available online through the eReserves service in eCentennial or as physical items that can be borrowed from a campus library on short-term loan. If your instructor is using eReserves, you will see a module in the course content on eCentennial. The list may include links to library resources like databases, articles, and eBooks; book chapters; web links; and open educational resources. Check your course outline or contact your instructor for information about where your assigned course readings are located.
