19 Discussions: Viewing and Grading

Grading Discussions

Discussions can be graded directly in the discussions tool or using the grades tool.

Option A: Using the Discussions Tool

To grade a discussion topic from the Discussion tool, take the steps as demonstrated in the video:

Option B: Using the Grades Tool

To grade a discussion from the Grades tool take the steps outlined below:

  1. Select Assessments in the navbar, and then Grades
  2. Choose Enter Grades from the upper toolbar
  3. Select the down-arrow attached to the grade-item column heading (not the category heading) associated with the discussion
  4. Select Grade All from the actions list
  5. Scroll down to the table in the Users section
  6. The Submission column will display an icon for each student who has postings to the associated area of the Discussions tool (select the icon to review the postings)

If using the Avenue to Learn rubric tool:

    1. For each student, select the icon in the Assessment column to open the rubric
    2. Select a score for each criterion by clicking a box in its row; at the bottom of the rubric, the Overall Score will be selected automatically based on the calculated sum of the criteria (Note: it is possible to override the calculated score by selecting an alternate box in the Overall Score row)
    3. Selecting a pencil icon will allow you to edit the score
    4. Selecting +Feedback in the rubric will allow you to enter criterion feedback
    5. Selecting +Feedback in the Overall Score will allow you to enter overall rubric feedback
    6. When done, click Save & Record
    7. The rubric score will be displayed in Grade column
    8. Additional grade feedback can be added by clicking the icon in the Feedback column
    9. Select Save and Close to exit the Grade Item (this will release the grade to the specific student)

If not using the Avenue to Learn rubric tool:

    1. For each student, enter a grade in the Grade column
    2. Grade feedback can be added by clicking the icon in the Feedback column
    3. Select Save and Close to exit the Grade Item (this will release the grade to the specific student)
