Smart Goals
Smart Goal 1
S– I want to improve knowledge on cultural sensitivities
M– I will have my preceptor quiz me on important facts to know different cultures and ways we can support them in the healthcare setting.
A- I will ask all my patients if there are any cultural beliefs or norms I should be aware of while caring for them. When a patient tells me a culture or religion they follow I am unfamiliar with I will be sure to research it to find any conflict with my regular care to that patients culture or any things I should or should not be doing.
R- Working in healthcare you will be working with a variety of cultures, improving your knowledge and skill and being culturally sensitives helps develop trust, and making each patient feel valued and worthy regardless of their cultural belief
T- I will be more knowledgeable surrounding cultural needs for various cultures by May 2025
Smart Goal #2
S- I want improve patient communication and establish an open line for communication early into each shift.
M- I will feel comfortable speaking with and starting conversations with each new patient
A- I will have a 5-10 minute conversation with each pt upon first assessment. While completing each patients vitals signs and completing a mini assessment of them I will try and learn three things about them. I can start by asking about their day or sleep, look around the room for items that might spark a conversation
R-. This might help the patient feel that I am approachable and ask for their needs or express concerns more openly and comfortably. An open line of communication is very important to be able to provide the best patient care
T- Halfway through my first clinical placement May 2025 I will be able to tell you three non medical facts about each patient after the first round in the shift.
