3 Core Beliefs & Values

Beliefs Statement

As a first year nursing student, I believe that compassion, respect, integrity and teamwork are essential in terms of making me a successful nurse. With all of these personalized values working hand on hand, I am committed to treating every person with the same level of respect and kindness because I will value their unique experiences and perspectives. I will work hard to always be honest and ethical with my actions to ensure that the decisions I make reflect the trust of others in me. I also understand the importance of compassion in nursing, which is why I will strive to give my outmost support, care and empathy for others. Last but not least, I will be dedicated to working collaboratively with others to learn, grow, and provide the best care possible for my future patients.

Compassion

I believe that in order to feel and maintain a real connection with patients, it is important to be compassionate towards them. This is can be achieved by showing genuine care, listening to their concerns and offering emotional support whenever they need it. I think the emphasis on their overall well-being is as important as getting medical treatments because they will truly only heal when the rest of their well-being is taken care of rather than just their physical health. It is also proven that compassion enables patients to make more appropriate healthcare decisions, improved commitment towards treatment plans, and cheaper healthcare outcomes (Compassionate Care, n.d.). In short, compassion builds trust within the nurse-to-patient relationship and creates an environment where patients are more likely to heal due to their knowledge that they are being valued and understood.

Respect

Respect is always something that I valued because I believe that I should treat others the way I want to be treated. I believe that every patient should be treated fairly and no judgement regardless of their background. Therefore, respect is essential in terms of making the healthcare environment safe because it promotes a positive and collaborative space for healthcare professionals and patients. Research shows that showing respect generates positive outcomes for patients and colleagues which leads to an incline in health status and greater job satisfaction (The Value of Respect in Nurse-Physician Relations, 2024).  In other words, by respecting the patients’ personal beliefs, I can set my own feelings or opinions aside for the purpose of serving the patient personalized care that aligns with their values.

Integrity

Personally, I see integrity ensuring honesty, trust and ethics in the healthcare field. In other words, I believe in being transparent and standing by high moral standards whenever I am faced with a challenging situation. Hence why I would always advocate for my patient’s best interests and provide the best care while following the ethical guidelines of nursing and holding myself accountable for my actions. In summary, valuing integrity will help me build a healthy and trusting relationships with my patients and colleagues because of the assurance that I always act responsibly and truthfully (Massari, 2022).

Team Work

I believe that team work makes the dream work. Healthcare is a work field that requires collaborative effort, which ranges from individual’s combined skills, knowledge, and perspectives in order to maximize the best care for a patient. However, in order for patients to receive the best care, effective communication and cooperation within colleagues is crucial. This is because “effective communication creates a positive patient experience and ensures patient safety” (Adler, 2023). Overall, this value encourages me to have an open mindset, share my own knowledge, and work appropriately with the healthcare team for the benefit of the patients.
