Legal and Human Rights Considerations
WSIB (Workplace Safety Insurance)
-
Ontario students are covered under WSIB while on unpaid program-required placements.
-
If the placement is with an employer not covered by WSIB, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) provides private insurance.
-
Required forms:
-
Student Declaration of Understanding (Appendix J) – signed by student
-
Letter to Placement Employers (Appendix K) – signed by Agency Field Supervisor
-
Deadline: Submit signed forms to the Field Placement Coordinator by the first Friday of the semester.
-
Vehicle Usage
-
Students cannot use personal vehicles to transport clients or complete agency work.
-
Agencies are responsible for ensuring students are covered when using agency vehicles.
Medications
-
Students cannot administer medications unless:
-
Supervised by a qualified staff member who assumes responsibility, or
-
Fully trained by the agency prior to administration.
-
Physical Restraints
-
Students are not trained in physical restraints.
-
Qualified staff must be present if there is any risk of a client requiring restraint.
Personal Care
-
Students are not expected or qualified to provide personal care (e.g., lifting, bathing, changing diapers).
Universal Precaution Training & Protection
-
Agencies must provide universal precaution training.
-
Students must be informed of any required vaccinations for their protection.
Human Rights & Safety
-
Ethics in the student–Agency Field Supervisor relationship should match professional worker/client ethics.
-
Harassment (personal or sexual) will not be tolerated.
-
Students must notify the College Field Supervisor immediately if harassment occurs.
Labour Disruption
-
In the event of a strike or walkout at the placement site:
-
Contact your College Field Supervisor immediately.
-
An alternate work plan will be developed in collaboration with the College and Agency Field Supervisors.
-
The Field Placement Coordinator must be kept updated.
-
-
Important: Students may not cross picket lines or perform duties of striking workers.
Accommodation
-
students have the right to study and work in an environment free from discrimination or harassment.
-
The College provides accommodation based on grounds defined in the Ontario Human Rights Code. Accommodations may include changes or modifications to standard practices.
-
Students requiring accommodation should schedule a meeting with CALCS – Centre for Accessible Learning and Counselling Services.
Students with Disabilities
-
In compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Legislation and Centennial College accommodation policy, students with disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations to support their learning.
-
Accommodation supports are intended to help students achieve and demonstrate the Program Vocational Learning Outcomes and provincial standards without lowering academic expectations.
-
Students must self-identify and obtain a letter specifying accommodation needs from CALCS.
-
Prior to placement, students must meet with a CALCS counsellor to review accommodations and develop strategies for success.
-
Legally, students are not required to disclose the nature of their disability.
