Required Field Placement Hours

Field Placement Hours Overview

Field Placement is a core component of the AMHW program and is guided by:

  • Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU): Sets program standards and minimum required placement hours for diploma completion.

  • Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW): Recognizes graduates of approved Social Service Worker programs—including the Addiction and Mental Health Worker Program—for registration eligibility.

These hours are minimum, mandatory requirements that must be completed in full to meet program and professional standards. They are not negotiable.

AMHW-310 – Field Placement 1

  • Total Hours: 224 hours (MCU-mandated)

  • Schedule: 2 days per week, 8 hours per day

  • Days: Mondays and Tuesdays (Fall semester)

    • For some Addiction Rehabilitation placements, the schedule may include Saturdays and Sundays. Students completing weekend placements will have Mondays and Tuesdays off.

  • Block Week: Required in Week 4

    • Students attend placement every day of Block Week

    • Students are exempt from other classes during Block Week to accommodate full-time placement hours

AMHW-410 – Field Placement 2

  • Total Hours: 448 hours (MCU-mandated)

  • Schedule: 4 days per week, 8 hours per day

  • Days: Tuesdays through Fridays (Winter semester)

  • Block Week:  There is no Block Week in AMHW 410

Important Notes:

  • These required hours are essential for program completion.

  • Failure to meet placement requirements may affect your ability to graduate and, for SSW students, your eligibility to apply for registration with the OCSWSSW.
