Students have the option to pursue an Independent Search to find their own Field Placement instead of following the standard matching process outlined in this manual. Independent Searches can be:

  • Voluntary – initiated by the student as a choice

  • Involuntary – required due to missed requirements, unsuccessful matches, or unprofessional behaviour

While the reasons differ, both types of Independent Search require students to:

  1. Complete the Independent Search Form provided by the Field Placement Coordinator

  2. Include:

    • Agency name and contact details

    • Description of services provided

    • Identification of an Agency Field Supervisor who agrees to oversee placement hours

  3. Submit the completed form by the required deadline

  4. Receive final approval from the Field Placement Coordinator, who ensures that the placement is appropriate, aligns with AMHW learning outcomes, and meets Centennial College policies

Voluntary Independent Search

A Voluntary Independent Search occurs when a student chooses to find their own placement rather than being matched through the formal matching process. This typically includes:

  • Indicating a preference for an Independent Search on the Area of Interest Form

  • Researching and networking with agencies of interest

  • Identifying a placement that aligns with career goals, personal interests, or community connections

This option provides autonomy and flexibility while still adhering to program requirements and deadlines.

Involuntary Independent Search

An Involuntary Independent Search occurs when a student is required to secure their own placement due to:

  • Missed requirements – e.g., incomplete forms, workshops, or orientations

  • Unsuccessful matches – unable to secure a placement after assigned interviews

  • Unprofessional behaviour – e.g., missed or late interviews, poor communication, or inappropriate conduct

Students placed on an Involuntary Independent Search must meet with the Field Placement Coordinator before continuing and demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and adherence to deadlines.

Agency Outreach & Student Responsibility

Students pursuing an Independent Search are permitted to contact agencies in the broader community, excluding existing Centennial College community partners.

  • Why partner agencies are excluded: Partner agencies are reserved for students participating in the formal matching process. This policy ensures fairness, prevents duplicate placement requests, and safeguards long-standing community relationships and established partnerships with the College and the AMHW Program

  • Student responsibilities: Even if a placement is successfully secured independently, students are fully responsible for:

    • Researching potential agencies

    • Initiating contact and scheduling interviews

    • Confirming an Agency Field Supervisor

    • Completing the Independent Search Form with full details

    • Submitting all materials by deadlines

    • Following up as needed and ensuring placement meets learning outcomes

This process requires students to carve out dedicated time for outreach, research, and follow-up. Strong organization, proactive planning, time management, and professionalism are essential for success.
