Individual Values

As an educator, your own values will impact your decisions around how you choose to use Generative AI tools in your teaching and course design and how you talk about Generative AI with your learners. As discussed in the section on Emotional Intelligence, there is also an emotional component to this discussion. Recognizing and naming your values may help you better navigate your beliefs and emotional response to Generative AI.

This list is not meant to be exhaustive, but some examples of how different values might impact perceptions and use of Generative AI are included below.

Research real-world applications of AI in your discipline or field and offer learners activities or assessments that mirror these uses.

Autonomy

Allow learners to make their own decisions around how they use Generative AI technologies, encouraging them to properly document their use.

Connection

Avoid the use of Generative AI technologies for personal communications with your learners and favour your own voice.

Criticality

Make a point to teach your students how to critically evaluate AI Generated output and offer activities or assessment that embed critique.

Curiosity

Encourage learners to explore the possibilities and limitations of Generative AI technologies as a tool for learning.

Efficiency

Explore ways that Generative AI tools can support your work and reduce workload.

Equity

Raise concerns about the biases embedded in Generative AI training data.

Honesty

Establish a very clear process for acknowledging and documenting the use of Generative AI for your students and yourself.

Inclusion

Explore the potential uses of Generative AI technologies to support diverse learner needs.

Individuality

Emphasize the importance of student voice and voice concerns about the potential for Generative AI to flatten personal perspectives or produce generic content.

Innovation

Design problem-based assessments that invite students to explore the potential of Generative AI technologies.

Reflexivity

Develop assignments that offer opportunities for personal reflection and discourage the use of Generative AI for them.

Transparency

Inform your students on if/how you use Generative AI technologies in your own teaching and in the design of your course.
