Case Study 1- AI based Policy
Recognizing the significance of AI in education, the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences at the University of Boston took proactive steps and developed the CDS Generative AI Assistance (GAIA) Policy [1].
The foundation of this policy lay in gaining a clear understanding of what constitutes cheating in the context of AI [2].
Attributes such as transparency, fairness, and consideration for stakeholders, including students’ career development and professors’ opportunities to enhance student exposure, were essential components in shaping the GAIA policy [1]. Refer to the flowchart of AI Policy development as below:
Figure 1: Flowchart of AI Policy development in academics [1]
In the CDS DS 380 course, led by Dr. Wesley J. William, which consisted of a cohort of 47 students, the professor introduced the implementation of the GAIA policy within the campus environment [3].
Subsequently, the University board approved the GAIA policy as part of the broader CDS policy (Computer and data science policy) [1].
This pioneering initiative proved highly beneficial to students and faculty alike, providing valuable guidance on the appropriate use of ChatGPT as an educational tool.
