Student Policies and Procedures

Know Your Rights and Responsibilities

Student rights and responsibilities are also identified within the following pieces of government legislation:

  • the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;
  • the Ontario Human Rights Code;
  • the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

Mohawk College has developed several policies and procedures designed to provide and support an enriching and rewarding learning experience in which the rights of individuals are respected.

Any records, documents and other material containing information directly related to a student, which are maintained by the college, will be treated as confidential information subject to any provisions or exemptions in the legislation.

Special notes pertaining to IAHS students:

  • Mohawk College’s academic policies and Human Rights Policy will apply to IAHS students.
  • McMaster University’s non-academic policies and procedures will also apply to the IAHS students when they are studying or socializing on the McMaster campus (including e.g., the Code of Conduct, the Sexual Harassment and Anti-Discrimination Policy, the Alcohol Policy, etc.). When Mohawk College students are within the IAHS, the College’s non-academic policies and procedures will apply.
  • McMaster University’s “Information Security” policy will apply to students at the IAHS.

Please be advised that these policies and procedures are subject to change. To ensure that you have the most up-to-date information before proceeding, check the website.

You are responsible for your actions at all times. Ignorance of the rules, regulations and standards of conduct will not be accepted as a defense against disciplinary action.

A breach in ethical behaviour (either in the academic or clinical portions of the Program) will result in disciplinary action up to an including that the student be required to withdraw from the Program (See Academic Honesty Policy #SS-3203-2008 on MyMohawk.

  • Please note this policy also applies to your clinical/field/service learning placement non-academic requirements, as creating, using or submitting fraudulent, false, or misleading documentation for any form of academic advantage (e.g., admissions requirements, credentials, medical documentation) is a violation of the policy.

The Student Rights and Responsibilities Office (SRRO) acts as the first point of contact for students and staff with issues under the:

  • Student Behaviour Policy
  • Student Human Rights

And is a point of contact to assist students with concerns under the:

  • Academic Appeals Policy
  • Student Complaint Procedure

A full range of dispute resolution services (consultation, facilitation, mediation, conciliation, conflict, coaching and debriefing) are available to assist with policy implementation or to address interpersonal disputes, academic disputes or systemic issues.
