PROGRAM SPECIFICS

Program Number: 993

Program Website: http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/993

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Canadian Health Care (CHC) for Internationally Educated Health Professionals program (#993) helps expose internationally educated health care professionals to the Canadian Health Care System .  Please note that it is not a bridging program.  It is an introductory program to Canada, and Canadian health care in general, with an emphasis on professional English language acquisition. Please also note that our program is not a nursing program and does not provide clinical placements or nursing courses.  For more specific details about this program please refer to the program website.

This program is designed for internationally educated health care professionals (nurses, dentists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, doctors etc.). It provides a critical understanding of the important elements of the Health System in Canada, a cultural orientation to Canada and the language/communication requirements to be effective in a Canadian health care setting. Communication, problem solving and teamwork are part of every course in the program. A considerable amount of emphasis is dedicated to the development of effective communication skills as it is considered a critical skill requirement for transition to working effectively as a health care professional in Canada.

As this is not a bridging program and does not lead to professional licensure, as all our healthcare professions are regulated by a professional body.  These professional bodies determine the various requirements and criteria required to obtain one’s license here in Canada; this can be a long process.  The CHC program provides a good introduction to the differences in health care practices here in Canada and greatly improves one’s professional English language skills.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

It is a goal of the program faculty and staff that the Cardiovascular Technology program at Mohawk College complies with the standards, outcomes, and competencies of the CSCT National Occupational Competency Profile and to maintain the accordance of accreditation. For a more detailed description of the competency profile please refer to the full document found at: http://www.csct.ca.

Theory

The Cardiovascular Technology program prepares graduates to assist physicians in cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment. Tests performed include 12 Lead ECG, Holter Monitoring, ECG Event Monitoring, Ambulatory BP Monitoring, Exercise Testing, Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology studies.

This program provides competency-based education linking theoretical concepts and clinical application of a broad spectrum of courses and techniques. Students are provided with clinical experience in hospitals and clinics affiliated with the program as well as on site ‘hands-on’ clinical training during the didactic portion of the program.

This program has been endorsed by the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT) and the program is based on the CSCT National Occupational Competency Profile.

Graduates of the program are actively recruited by cardiac diagnostic centres in hospitals and cardiology clinics. Opportunities are also available in cardiac rehabilitation centres, research departments and in industry as Application Specialist or Medical Equipment sales. Graduates are also eligible to apply for admission to the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program at Mohawk College.

Clinical Experience

All students enter the Cardiovascular Technology program with the understanding that it is a program requirement to complete their clinical training at clinical agencies affiliated with the Cardiovascular Technology program and which may be located throughout Ontario. These agencies have contracted in advance with the college to provide specific experience and resources during the normal clinical semester times; therefore, placements are not available at any other agencies or during any other times. Allocation of students to these clinical facilities will be determined by the college in accordance with established practice. The college cannot accommodate any student requests for special consideration. Students must be prepared financially and personally to relocate and/or commute to their assigned clinical placement.

Graduates of the program have the opportunity to become a member of several professional associations dedicated to the promotion, development and standardization of the field of Cardiovascular Technology. Graduates of the program are eligible to write the national certification exam set by the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT), as well as American certification with Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) for Certified Cardiographic Technicians (CCT).

Graduates find employment in cardiac investigation services provided by hospitals, medical clinics, private offices, and commercial companies.

Language Requirement

OTA/PTA

PROGRAM SPECIFICS

Program Number: 746

Program Website: http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/746

WELCOME TO THE OTA and PTA DIPLOMA PROGRAM

This two-year diploma program was developed in response to changes in Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physiotherapy (PT) practice and broader changes in the Ontario’s health care system.

Occupational therapist assistants and physiotherapist assistants (OTA and PTA) work in many different health and health care environments where registered Occupational Therapists (OT) and Physiotherapists (PT) have responsibility for assigning tasks and responsibilities to OTAs and PTAs. OTAs and PTAs are always directly accountable and responsible to the supervising Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist. OTAs and PTAs are often part of an intra- and inter-professional clinical team of health care providers.

Now that you are in the OTA and PTA Diploma Program, you are student occupational therapist assistants and physiotherapist assistants (student OTA and PTA) and it is expected that interactions between yourselves and faculty are respectful and professional at all times.

Through your Program of Studies (POS) you will be provided with opportunities to understand, practice and apply newly acquired skills and develop acceptable professional behaviour in a variety of learning environments.

Throughout the Program, we emphasize the importance of taking responsibility for your own learning and professional behaviour. There is much to experience, to question and to explore, as you develop the knowledge and skills to effectively interact with and teach others. We are also preparing you for working in clinical settings where the intra- and inter-professional team and clients/patients are relying on your presence.

VISION, MISSION & VALUES OF THE OTA and PTA DIPLOMA PROGRAM

Guided by the priorities identified in the Mohawk College Strategic Plan and the recently developed (Fall 2018) School of Health Strategic Plan as well as the principles articulated in the College’s Vision, Mission and Values, the OTA and PTA Diploma Program has revised a statement of its Vision, Mission and Values and program goals.

The program’s Vision, Mission, Values and Goals are published below.

Alignment of this framework to the Vision, Mission and Values of Mohawk College is shown in the chart below. The School of Health’s Bold Initiatives will guide the programs purpose and mission. The OTA/PTA Program Values are aligned with the Colleges institution values.

Massage Therapy Professional Practice Opportunities

The Massage Therapy Program provides students with opportunities to practice and consolidate learning through simulated experiences and direct client care in clinical practice and outreach settings. Students work with class peers in simulated care throughout all six semesters of the program. In semesters 3 through 6, students provide direct client care to the public in the Massage Therapy Student Clinic at Fennell campus and/or at student clinics located at the sites of Mohawk College community partners.

Outreach opportunities begin in semester 4. Students gain real life experience by working with a variety of different and progressively more complex populations. All clinical practice and outreaches are supervised by program staff who are Registered Massage Therapists. This direct client care experience may occur in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and in the community at various sporting events, corporate wellness events, trade shows, expos, and open houses.

Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from clinics and outreaches, and ensuring they have the required equipment. Students are not eligible to participate in clinical practice or outreaches until and unless they have completed all non-academic preplacement requirements.

For more information about professional practice opportunities, you may contact one of the program’s Clinic and Outreach Support Staff:
rodger.bramwell@mohawkcollege.ca
alexis.james@mohawkcollege.ca

Students are required to complete 350 supervised professional practice hours providing direct client care to the public. Failure to complete prerequisite courses will result in the loss of professional practice hours. Loss of professional practice hours may impact your ability to demonstrate the entry to practice competencies, and result in a failing grade.
