Residency requirement: the amount of transfer credit (exemptions, PLAR, etc.) will be limited by the residency policy; each candidate must complete a minimum of 25% of their Program of Studies at the College. The 25% residency minimum is required for students to receive a College credential, additional residency requirements will be determined in consultation with the appropriate Associate Dean.

Course Exemptions

https://www.mohawkcollege.ca/registration-and-records/registering-for-classes-by-selecting-your-timetable/course-exemptions

Students who wish to receive exemption for a particular course are responsible for filling out an Online Exemption Form via MyMohawk. Applications for exemptions should be submitted before the semester start. The submission deadline for exemption requests is the end of the Add/Drop period (day 10 of the semester). All exemption request documents are handed in to The Square. Students will have to provide official transcripts in a sealed envelope and course outlines if course work was completed outside of Mohawk College. International credentials will need to be validated by an international accreditation service.

Application Process Summary:

  1. Go to the Online Exemption Form
    1. sign in to MyMohawk, go to the Academics tab
    2. under the Course Tools channel, click on Apply for a Course Exemption
    3. ***your device must allow pop-ups in order to complete the application***
  2. Complete the Exemption Form (you can complete multiple exemptions at once)
    1. choose the exemption type (General Education Elective or Regular Course)
    2. choose the course for exemption (if applying for a General Education exemption, use the default OPEL GE10x course; do not apply for exemption from the specific course)
    3. enter the transferring institution/course information
  3. Submit your request online
  4. Submit your supporting documentation (transcript and course outline) to The Square**
    1. Each exemption must be accompanied by an original sealed transcript, and a full course outline. Multiple exemptions require separate transcripts for each request.
    2. If your request is a Mohawk-to-Mohawk exemption (i.e. using a past course towards an elective), you need to inform The Square after submitting the request. You do not need to supply any documentation
  5. Check status of your Exemption Request (may take up to 6 weeks)
    1. click on Student Course Exemption Report under the Course Tools channel
    2. if your exemption request has been Approved, an “E” grade will be posted under “View Your Grades” on MyMohawk (if your exemption request has been Approved for a General Education elective course, the exemption will be posted against an OPEL GE10x course code), and you will be automatically withdrawn from the course
    3. if your exemption request has been Denied, the report will indicate the reason for the denial and give you the name of the person who reviewed your request.

*If you are applying for an exemption to multiple Elective courses, you must submit a separate exemption request for each elective

**Some documents may be submitted via mail or e-mail, as follows:

Students are expected to attend and keep up with course work until the exemption is processed. If an exemption is approved, the student will be automatically withdrawn from the course. Please note that students granted exemptions are still to pay full fees. Students will not receive a refund for these courses, unless they drop below a full course load. Students will receive the grade designation “E” on their official transcript and the course will not contribute to their GPA.

Exemptions from a core course will be granted by the Program Coordinator to a student who can show successful completion of another course of at least the same level and scope as defined by the course outline and module objectives, covering a minimum of 90% of the Canadian content of our course and achieving a minimum of 60% (or the passing grade of the Mohawk course) in that previous course, completed within the past 5 years. Exemptions from a non-core course (communications, electives, etc.) will be routed to the appropriate department for review and processing.

Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR)

https://www.mohawkcollege.ca/registration-and-records/prior-learning-assessment-recognition

Credit for prior learning is a process that allows you to receive official recognition for skills which you have already acquired. Learning may have been through on-the-job experience, formal education and training programs, volunteer activities or through self-instruction. College credits obtained through this process may account towards a certificate or diploma at Mohawk College. Candidates are permitted to secure up to a maximum of 75% of required credits through this method.

The student applies for Prior Learning Assessment Recognition one semester prior to registering in the course. The coordinator reviews the student’s request, and a personal interview may be required for assessment. The student may be required to submit a portfolio or be formally tested before a credit is granted. The applicant has to demonstrate that they have fulfilled the learning outcomes and elements on the course outline of the course they wish to apply for credit. The final decision rests with the Associate Dean, Allied Health.

The learning acquired through work and life experiences must be college-level, program or course appropriate, have the appropriate balance of theory and practice, and must be current within the past 5 years.

Note:

  • students requesting an assessment of prior learning are required to pay the appropriate assessment fee
  • students will not receive a refund if credit is denied
  • students must register in these courses and will receive the designation “CR”, or an actual grade on their transcript, as determined by the department awarding credit
  • students will not receive a reduction in tuition if the credit is granted

To start this process or for more information on Prior Learning Assessment Recognition for the program, contact the PLAR Office at 905-575-2395 or plar@mohawkcollege.ca.
