Section 4: Experiential Learning

Confidentiality

The Personal Health Information Protection Act in Ontario 2004 (PHIPA) legally requires utmost compliance with all aspects pertaining to healthcare confidentiality. PHIPA applies to any personal health information collected, used or disclosed. Any information acquired by a student for learning purposes is to be treated in accordance with the Act. Confidentiality applies to all information (health, social, personal), patients/clients, their families and team members in professional practice environments. School presentations based on fieldwork visits or personal communications should comply with confidentiality guidelines – including any social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Threads, TikTok, Discord, etc.).

Tansley Woods Campus:  It is critical that students treat resident’s personal information with respect. Anything you see, hear, read, or observe must be kept confidential. Talking about a resident or someone else in front of them is disrespectful. A break of confidentiality may result in dismissal. If someone asks you for information about a resident, a good way to response is “I am sorry that is not information that I can share. Would you like to speak to the Neighbourhood Coordinator?”. If a family member asks about another resident, please respond by saying: “I am sorry I cannot speak about another resident with anyone other than their family. Would you like to talk to a team member?”.
