OTA/PTA

Didactic

Due to the experiential and collaborative nature of the learning in this Program, and to maximize student success in completion of course objectives, consistent attendance is an expectation at all scheduled sessions. This includes lectures, laboratory sessions, tutorials, site visits and clinical fieldwork placements. You may be required to attend classes/events that are scheduled from Mondays to Fridays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Some classes/events may need to take place outside of regularly schedule time slots.

Absences make it impossible to assess your progress. If illness or an emergency necessitates an absence, the student is required to contact each course instructor/tutor immediately with reasons stated so that the absence and information is recorded. Absences may necessitate review with Academic Advisor or course faculty. Therefore it is strongly advised that students do not take vacation during the academic year. Also, it is also advisable that students keep themselves available for at least two weeks after each semester in case there is a need for completion of missed work or unsuccessful components. Students are expected to consult with their classmates for any missed class content.

Punctuality is a professional behaviour that is also expected of students. Chronic lateness will not be tolerated as it is disruptive and also affects the learning of others. Chronic lateness will be reflected in your course evaluations. (See academic course outlines and also MyMohawk: Student Behaviour Policy)

Skills/labs:

Students assume responsibility for their own learning to maximize success. Attendance is required in 80% of classes for successful completion of all skills courses. Students are to contact a class member to follow up on missed course work and clarify specific course expectations with the specific faculty.

Clinical/Fieldwork

Attendance at all fieldwork placements is mandatory. Refer to Section 4 – Attendance on Placement for further details.

It is your responsibility to contact a class member regarding class materials, handouts, assigned work and due dates. MT

Students are expected to assume responsibility for their own learning to maximize student success. Each student is responsible for meeting all program requirements for attendance and punctuality.

Students must attend all classes, and are expected to be prepared by having completed assigned readings and homework. Personal appointments and work schedules must be scheduled outside of school hours. Students must arrive on time for class, prepared to begin the activities outlined (i.e. have all equipment and be in full uniform). Late arrival is disruptive to the learning environment. Repeated lateness is disrespectful and will be addressed under the Student Behaviour Policy

The practical learning environment requires students to partner with and practice on each other, and function as team members. Students must remain in the class for the full scheduled time, using their time productively to enhance the learning environment.

Attendance is required during any faculty-assisted lab time (i.e. practice, testing, etc.).

Participation and professionalism are evaluated in all practical classes. Failure to attend and/or participate as a team member will result in a deduction in marks.

It is each students’ responsibility to be informed and up to date regarding class materials, handouts, assigned work and due dates. Information on the above items can be found in eLearn Content, News items, or emails. Students are responsible for clarifying specific course expectations and making up any missed sessions. Follow the rule of “Ask Three Then Me” (i.e. check eLearn content, check emails, or ask a class mate) before consulting the faculty/instructor.

Professional Practice in Clinic and Outreach

Attendance at all scheduled clinical experience is compulsory. Failure to attend clinic and/or outreach may result in the student being denied participation in a given practice opportunity. Absenteeism may jeopardize the student’s ability to meet the clinical objectives and may result in the student receiving an Incomplete (I) or failure (FL) grade.

Illness, Bereavement and Special Leaves

Students must notify faculty of any absence due to illness, bereavement, or special leaves. Each situation will be dealt with on an individual basis. Appropriate documentation will be required.

RT

The Recreation Therapy program, uses an experiential learning approach to provide hands on learning opportunities throughout the two-year program of study. This approach requires flexibility in scheduling. Classes are delivered during the regular scheduled class time, as well as, delivered outside of classroom time in workshop formats and on-line. Students will be informed of the dates required for attendance at the beginning of each semester. Attendance is considered a basic requirement for learning. Often experiential learning assignments cannot be completed without attending the related learning session.

For lab classes in specific courses, attendance is required in 80% of labs for successful completion of all skills courses. Students who do not attend class will receive a zero for any co- related assignments, assessments or grades for participation, and/or marks may be deducted for lack of participation.

Students may be required to purchase workshop learning opportunities in order to participate. This requirement is equivalent to purchasing required text books for learning.
