Section 5: Evaluation, Grading, and Promotion

Academic Appeals

Prior to initiating the formal Academic Appeal process, it is expected that the faculty member and the student will meet and work together informally to try to resolve the issue, wherever possible. Only after these collaborative discussions, should the Level 1 Academic Appeal process be considered.

To initiate an informal appeal, students will email their course faculty indicating they would like to discuss their course grade, and include any rationale of why they were unsuccessful in the course.

For the detailed policies and process for academic appeals, please refer to the Mohawk College Policy. The Academic Appeals Policy provides standardized procedures across the college for students to review and appeal a final course grade. The college wide policy has been implemented to set out the appeals process and to ensure reasonable and equitable treatment of student concerns related to grading.

The procedure below is specific to students in the Allied Health programs:

Given the sequential nature of the program courses, as well as the program’s responsibility to ensure the same competent performance of students practicing in a clinical setting, the following conditions will apply to the students appealing a course grade.

If a failed course grade is under appeal, the student may not proceed to the clinical/placement/fieldwork courses in the program, and will assume an inactive status until the decision of the appeal is finalized.
