Roles and Expectations
CHC
Responsibilities of the Student
Students are not paid by the site while on placement. In addition to the responsibilities, expectations, and guidelines as noted in the Service Learning Placement Course Manual , the student will:
- Review the course’s learning objectives for the placement, and meet with the host delegate to discuss and plan for these objectives.
- Complete placement activities as set out in this module.
- Show initiative and apply problem solving skills.
- Participate as a member of the agnecy’s volunteer team.
- Participate in the process of ongoing and final evaluation.
- Provide host with any required information as requested (police clearance, immunization record, etc.). Complete required NAR’s prior to the start of the placement.
Responsibilities of the Host
- Review, if required as per volunteer policies , immunization record, and police clearance (PIC) results to determine if student is safe for this placement site.
- Provide the student with the learning atmosphere in the assigned volunteer setting. Provide the students with 70 hours of learning experience (including orientation).
- Participate in preceptor training as needed.
- Meet regularly with the student to discuss learning objectives and any projects/problems.
- Plan with the student a time line to complete objectives and extra activities.
- Give appropriate direction and feedback to the student.
- Provide ongoing evaluation of the student’s progress in meeting learning objectives
- Incorporate activities and learning from the experts amongst staff members for the student.
- Keep a record of attendance and number of volunteer hours completed. Submit final record by due date to faculty.
- Contact the faculty when a problem arises which requires faculty involvement.
Responsibilities of the Faculty
- Assist student (as required) in determining ability to meet learning objectives and the process involved.
- Review with the student and the host, the placement experience.
- Assist the host in the evaluation of the student – if needed.
- Be available for contact by the placement host when a problem arises which requires faculty involvement.
- Site visits (local sites only) or calls to check on progress with the student and host.
- Provide activities, objectives, time log sheet, time line template, and evaluation tools.
- Correlate results of the on site evaluation and time log sheet to produce final mark.

ROLE OF THE CLINICAL LIAISON
- Support student clinical placement
- Student advisor for clinical practice
- Conduct clinical allotment
- Organize assignment of students to appropriate clinical agencies
- Plan for equivalence of student experience
- Liaise with pre-placement services in the college
- Communication
- Deliver pre and post-clinical allotment information sessions
- Deliver pre-clinical practice orientation sessions
- Outline requirements for Clinical Practice including ePortfolio and CompTracker
- Set up and monitor MyCanvas Clinical Practice courses for
- Year 1 students
- Year 2 students
- Manage student incidents during clinical placements
- Consult with clinical supervisor and/or program coordinator as required
- Prepare student learning contracts as necessary and liaise with both students and clinical supervisors in the remediation process.
- Maintain records of:
- Clinical information
- Student clinical progress and weekly feedback
- Student clinical ePortfolios
- Student evaluation outcomes in clinical courses for promotion

EXPECTATIONS DURING THE PLACEMENT
It is the responsibility of each student to be aware of and abide by the policies and procedures of the clinical facility and to follow the rules of conduct for the agency/facility/institution. This includes being punctual, working assigned hours, and carrying out all assigned work. Students are expected to respect confidentiality and to behave in a professional manner at all times. Students’ behaviour in clinical placements is a reflection on your College and the Program and can influence your future employment opportunities.
PHARM TECH
PLACEMENT – ROLE OF THE STUDENT, PLACEMENT HOST, AND FACULTY
Responsibilities of the Student
Students are not paid by the site while on placement. In addition to the responsibilities, expectations, and guidelines as noted in the Placement Course Modules, the student will:
- Identify their learning objectives for the placement, and meet with the host delegate to discuss and plan for these objectives.
- Complete placement activities as set out in this module.
- Show initiative and apply problem solving skills.
- Participate as a member of the pharmacy team and within the overall health care system.
- Participate in the process of ongoing and final evaluation.
- Provide host with any required information as requested (police clearance, immunization record, mask fitting results, etc.).
- Prepare an action plan to deal with an allergies or conditions that may affect performance while on placement, and to disclose to the placement supervisor any allergies or conditions that may require attention while on site, and the action plan prepared.
Responsibilities of the Host
- Review, if required as per hiring policy, immunization record, police clearance (PIC), and mask fitting results to determine if student is safe for this placement site.
- Provide the student with the learning atmosphere in the assigned pharmacy setting. Provide the students with required hours of learning experience under full-time direct supervision of a pharmacist or technician.
- Participate in preceptor training as needed.
- Meet weekly with the student to discuss learning objectives and weekly projects/problems.
- Plan with the student a time line to complete objectives and extra activities.
- Give appropriate direction and feedback to the student.
- Provide ongoing evaluation of the student’s progress in meeting learning objectives and provide a final overall evaluation of the student’s performance. Submit evaluation by due date to faculty.
- Incorporate activities and learning from the experts amongst staff members for the student.
- Incorporate activities to allow students to be exposed to and ideally demonstrate competencies related to the expanded scope for pharmacy technicians (checking, verbal orders, training patients, etc.). These can be done by simulation or direct supervision.
- Keep a record of attendance. Submit final record by due date to faculty.
- Contact the faculty when a problem arises which requires faculty involvement.
Responsibilities of the Faculty
- Assist student (as required) in determining learning objectives and the process involved.
- Review with the student and the host, the placement experience.
- If required, assist the host in the evaluation of the student.
- Be available for contact by the placement host when a problem arises which requires faculty involvement.
