OTA/PTA
CLINICAL FIELDWORK PLACEMENTS
(See CLINICAL FIELDWORK HANDBOOK for further details.)
Clinical Fieldwork Placement is a privilege and an essential part of the curriculum. It is an opportunity for students to apply and integrate new knowledge and skills and to experience new learning situations in “real” clinical settings. Students are expected to participate in practical fieldwork experience throughout the duration of the course/program. All clinical placements must be completed within 12 months after the end of the academic portion of the program.
Legal affiliation agreements exist between Mohawk College, the OTA and PTA Diploma Program and each clinical facility. Where professional services are provided through contracted services, affiliation agreements also exist with these service providers. Students will not be placed in facilities where there are no affiliation agreements.
The College cannot full guarantee any student requests for special consideration to a specific facility. Students must prepare themselves financially and personally to relocate and/or commute to their assigned placements. Students are responsible to arrange their own travel to and from the assigned placements and/or responsible for covering any costs incurred.
In meeting the OTA/PTA EAP Accreditation Standards, the Program requires that every student completes the required placement hours in both OTA and PTA experiences prior to graduation. Students must self-report should there be a concern regarding their ability to achieve the required hours in each discipline.
EVALUATIONS
There are different evaluation components for clinical placements. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all parts of the evaluation are completed prior to the end of the placement and that the completed documentation is submitted to the Program Clinical Coordinator at completion of the placement as per OTA and PTA Program timelines. Students that are completing two separate placements for each CLIN 10062 and CLIN 10105 must successfully meet the requirements for each portion of the placement.
In meeting the OTA/PTA EAP Accreditation Standards, the OTA/PTA Program does not approve the graduation of any student until the minimum 150 clinical placement hours are completed in both OTA and PTA and a total of 500 clinical hours are completed.
- Practicums: (CLIN 10062 and CLIN 10105): Clinical Fieldwork placements will be arranged by the Clinical Fieldwork Coordinator based on availability and faculty recommendation. The academic requirements of the program are the standard against which all placements are measured.
Students must meet these minimum criteria to be considered for an out of area placement:
- have a minimum academic grade point average of 75% with no history of incompletes or failures in academic or clinical courses
- have evidence from feedback from faculty and previous clinical placements that indicates that the student is an appropriate representative of the College and the OTA and PTA Diploma Program
- not in conflict with clinical placements of other College Therapist Assistant Programs.
- with a facility that has an affiliation agreement with Mohawk College
- consistent with the learning objectives of the Program
Practicums (CLIN 10062 and CLIN 10105) requirements must be completed within 12 months of completing the academic courses. Otherwise, the returning student may be required to re-take selected academic courses. Additional financial costs are the responsibility of the student.
