Weather & Campus Closures

In the event of inclement weather or other emergency situations, be sure to check the emergency closure information sources before heading to classes. A message about classes and College closing will be updated as needed. On days when the college is closed due to inclement weather, students in classes are not expected to attend. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain closure information. Be sure to check the closure information for both schools, as each makes their own closure decisions and at different times.

The IAHS campus falls under both Mohawk College closures and McMaster University closures (Policy #ERP803). However, if you have a class that day at the Fennell campus and it is open, you are still expected to attend.

Closure information for both schools can also be found by listening to local radio and TV stations.

If the college is open but a student chooses not to travel, the aforementioned attendance requirement and/or missed test procedure applies.

Note: Information about cancellation of particular classes or exams is generally not available. Students should clarify the policy regarding clinical and work placements with faculty and/or clinical preceptors.

Clinical

Mohawk policy, Campus/College Emergency Procedure – ERP803, item 6.7 – Students: Academic Placement, Service Learning or Volunteer:

• When the College is closed for an unexpected reason (e.g. inclement weather), students are not required to attend their placement location; however in the event that a student’s placement location is open, students should use their discretion, taking into consideration traveling conditions and their personal safety before deciding what is safe for them.
• Students should refer to their academic area (e.g. Program Handbook or Field Placement Manual) for specific information.
• Students must also follow the policy for reporting absences for their placement location and contact their academic program area.
• Please refer to Field Placement Manual or Program Area regarding expectations for making up missed placement days.

Notification Systems

McMaster and Mohawk provide mobile notification systems, which will alert staff and students to campus closures. Detailed information and instructions are available at the links below. It is recommended that all students sign-up with the notification systems, as there is no overhead announcement system on campus.
