ACC Peer Visitor Guide Section 2 – Roles and responsibilities
General
Trainers of peer visitor trainers should check whether the learners are comfortable with the material in this section of the ACC Peer Visitor Guide. Peer visitor trainers need to be comfortable, in advance of the training session, with the content they are going to teach and prepared to answer questions from peer visitor learners. Keep in mind adult learning and the content you will be teaching. Based on the content of roles and responsibilities trainers may find that a specific type of learning will be easier to teach, as well as to digest for the learners.
This section is comprised of four “chapters” – 1) roles and responsibilities of a peer visitor, 2) characteristics of a peer visitor, 3) what is and what is not allowed, and 4) ethics.
In-person
The concepts to be covered under ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A PEER VISITOR are listed in the box near the bottom of this section in the ACC Peer Visitor Training Manual (In person). This is followed by a reflective exercise. It might be useful here to allow learners to practice leading this reflective exercise and discuss the challenges they think they might encounter and how to solve them.
Again, the concepts to be covered by trainers in the section entitled CHARACTERISTICS OF PEER VISITOR are outlined in the manual. This is followed by another reflective exercise and another opportunity for learners (or a learner) to practice leading this. This is followed by a “fill in the blanks” collaborative learning which can be done by the whole group of peer visitor learners. You might want to explore how trainers would manage this.
Concepts to be taught appear at the bottom of the section on WHAT IS AND WHAT IS NOT ALLOWED. The peer visitor trainer will begin by explaining these concepts followed by 2 role playing opportunities. This is another opportunity for future trainers to practice leading a group in a role play and the subsequent discussion.
The final section of this chapter is on ETHICS. The concepts to be taught in this section are outlined in the brown box near the bottom of the page. Learners have another opportunity to practice leading a reflection on this topic although you need to be mindful of time.
