Starting a session

Starting a teaching session effectively sets the tone for the entire session and helps establish a positive and engaging learning environment. Here are some steps to consider when beginning a teaching session.

Universal

A training session requires engagement.  As the trainer, it is your role to find a way to engage the participants.  One way to start is by introducing yourself, providing a brief outline for the day, and then asking the participant(s) to introduce themselves.  Set guidelines for the introduction, i.e., name, why are they taking the course, and perhaps a favourite activity, or animal.  There are many activities that can be used for Ice Breakers, which can be accessed with this link.

Learning requires engagement

The goal is to keep it brief, and then move on to a longer introductory activity with the group that is embedded in the slides.  As the trainer, make note of the participant’s expectations, and remember to address them. At the end of the day, ask the participants if their expectations have been met.

Welcome your learners as they enter the classroom or join the virtual session. Greet them warmly and establish a positive rapport. Take a moment to connect with them individually, showing genuine interest in their well-being or discussing any relevant topics.

Communicate the learning objectives or goals for the session. Let the students know what they will be able to achieve or understand by the end of the session. This provides a clear focus and sense of purpose for future peer visitors and sets their expectations for the lesson.

If the current session builds upon previous lessons, briefly review the key concepts or topics covered in the previous session. This helps students recall prior knowledge and establishes continuity in their learning journey.

Set the stage for the lesson by providing a relevant context or hook that captures students’ attention and generates curiosity. This could be a real-life scenario, a thought-provoking question, a captivating story, or a surprising fact.

Once the foundation is set, smoothly transition to the main content of the session. Begin delivering the lesson material, providing explanations, and examples, and guiding students through activities or discussions as planned.

In-person

Ensure that the physical space is arranged appropriately for the session. Set up any necessary equipment, materials, or visual aids that will be used during the lesson. Arrange seating or group arrangements to facilitate interaction and engagement.

Virtual

Ensure that everyone has access to the Zoom meeting before starting the meeting, a working/stable internet connection, and their cameras on which we will go into detail about in the next section.
