ECG/EKG Pre-Learn (1 Week)

The first week of the ACCN program will be focused on an ECG/EKG pre-learn module. Each learner will be required to complete the self-directed ECG/EKG online modules and complete two 8 to 12-hour clinical experience days in their first week. Participants must achieve a minimum of 60% to successfully complete the course. The skills from this course are needed in order to move into the core courses of the ACCN Program.

Accelerated CC Nursing Program (8 Weeks)

Following the pre-learn, learners will be enrolled in 8 weeks of online asynchronous learning comprised of didactic instruction and virtual simulation facilitated by a Mohawk College instructor for a total of 24 hours/week of online learning. The online learning will be comprised of six courses covering various aspects of critical care and body systems. Participants must achieve a minimum of 60% to successfully complete each course. In-person skills labs will take place during 2 of these 8 weeks at the IAHS at McMaster. Due to the short turn-around time of this program, late assignments will not be accepted.

Course Outcome
ECG/EKG Interpretation In this course, students will learn about different arrythmias that affect the heart’s atria and ventricles and how to interpret this by analyzing a variety of different ECG findings.
Introduction to Critical Care In this course, students will explore core concepts related to scope of professional practice within critical care, and analyze the impact of inter-professional teamwork, collaboration and communication on patient outcomes and team dynamics.
Cardiovascular In this course, students will examine the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system so that abnormalities including heart disease, heart failure, ventricular valve disease, cardiogenic shock, cardiomyopathies and their treatments may be identified.
Neuroscience In this course, students will examine the major neuromuscular problems that result in admission to a critical care setting and implementation of nursing processes for them.
GI/GU In this course, students will learn to care for patients with gastrointestinal and urinary problems requiring critical care including fluid and electrolyte balance.
Respiratory In this course, students will assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in critical care setting for patients with respiratory difficulty, using enhanced knowledge of pathopsychological processes.
Special Populations In this course, students will learn to understand and support special needs populations (e.g. pediatric, geriatric, psychiatric and transplant) in the critical care setting and develop skill in critically appraising research that supports nursing practice.
