The Program

As previously highlighted, QCA:K was established to help recent creative arts, humanities, and social science graduates from the Faculty of Arts and Science jump start their careers to be more successful in their first job by matching them with local employers. Alan Rottenberg – a proven business leader in the technology sector – took the initiative to conceive, fund, and launch this program in partnership with the Kingston Economic Development Corporation and Queen’s University. The program consists of a one-year, paid salary career apprenticeship, along with mentorship and networking opportunities to ensure success long-term.

Why QCA:K?

  • Secure full-time employment right after graduation
  • Receive support and coaching throughout the year from an alumni mentor
  • Build your professional network and develop your skills
  • Gain practical and real-world experience in the job application process

Funding & salaries

Businesses receive a maximum grant of $4,000 per month for the first four months of the apprenticeship (totaling a maximum of $16,000 per position). Apprenticeship salaries are on average around $40,000/year. In addition to facilitating this employment, the Apprenticeship Program matches students with industry and business leaders who serve as mentors.

the process

  • Working in collaboration with the local economic development agency, employers are identified and recruited to submit job postings.
  • Students apply to job postings through their university’s career services department, and complete an interview process.
  • Students receive their offers between March and May, and begin their positions from May onwards.
    • Graduates receive on-the-job mentoring and support from their employers – to assist them in making the transition to the workplace.
    • Employers receive a wage subsidy for four months of the employee’s gross salary (to a maximum of $4,000 per month), which is distributed as milestones are reached.
