General Process
The Economic Development Corporation leads the initial outreach and securing of employer partners. Employers are introduced to the Program and its benefits by the Kingston Economic Development Corporation. Once an employer has decided that they would like to post a job opportunity as part of the program, they are given a job posting form to fill in. Once that sheet is completed, the Economic Development Corporation sends it to their main contact at Queen’s University.
The next stage is led by Queen’s. This job posting is then loaded to Queen’s University’s MyCareer Page. Students are then notified about the job postings both by Queen’s University’s Career Services and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Marketing team. Students have until the deadline to apply for the posted opportunities. Once applications close, the Queen’s University Working Group removes any candidates who do not qualify to participate before batching together the applications and sending them directly to the participating employers.
At this stage, the employers are communicated with regarding the upcoming processes which involves reviewing the applications and selecting their preferred candidates for interviews. Employers may decide to conduct one or two-part interviews with candidates depending on their needs. Following the interview process, employers are requested to submit their rankings. Employers must only submit names of candidates they are willing to hire. Students are also asked to rank which employers they would be willing to work for.
Using the preferences of both the employers and the students, the Working Group then pairs students and employers. Once these successful pairings have been completed, employers are notified which student/s they are able to then contact and sign contracts with. Employers are then required to sign either a 4 or 8 month employer agreement with the program so as to process the QCA:K Grant.
Once employers have signed their contracts with the program and students have signed their contracts with their employer, their official participation in the program is confirmed. Apprentices will then be paired with a mentor who will help them navigate their transition into working life. Apprentices will begin their employment with their employer on their agreed upon date. Both Apprentices and employers may, during the course of their year participating in the program, be contacted about participating in program events and activities.
Ranking Process – Explained
The ranking process takes place after interviews have concluded, wherein employers and students rank their preferred choice(s) to Queen’s University. Please note that students should only submit the names of employers they wish to accept a job offer, i.e. if a student interviewed with four employers and assessed that they would acccept job offers from two, only submit those two names in your rankings. Similarily, employers should note that they should only submit the names of candidates they will hire should they be matched, i.e. if an employer interviewed four candidates and assessed that only two met their requirements, only submit those two names in youur rankings:
- Ranked 1st = Most valued employer
- Ranked 2nd = Second most valued employer
- Ranked 3rd = Third most valued employer
Students should be aware that employers will likely interview with several students and will be asked similarly to rank their preferred candidates. By the same token, employers should be aware that some students may be interviewing with several companies and will be asked similarly to rank their preferred employers. All rankings are confidential, and the Queen’s Career Apprenticeship program will not release these scores to external stakeholders (students or employers). This ranking process is designed to ensure the most compatible matches that will benefit both the employers and the students.
To keep the process on track, we ask employers and students to submit their rankings no later than April 1, 2022 at 4:00 PM.
Once the ranking process has been completed, the program will inform the employers of the match. Successful student participates will only be offered one position on the highest match score between both employer and student.
Please note that the employers and students must agree to adhere to the ranking principles in order to participate in the Queen’s Career Apprenticeship: Kingston program. Failing to follow program guidelines may result in loss of financial reimbursement of the employer and may jeopardize employment and/or mentorship opportunities for students.
