Chapter 3 Introduction

Stigma is discrimination against an individual or group of individuals. It can be a set a negative beliefs about a person that comes from a place of fear or misunderstanding. Factors that influence stigma are cultural values, societal standards, the media, and family beliefs. Mental health stigma is discrimination against an individual or group of people based on their mental health. Stigma can result in people feeling afraid and being labeled.
