Chapter 10: Introduction

Eating disorders do not discriminate on age, gender, sexual orientation, culture or social status. Individuals living with eating disorders can be living in any shape or size body. In Canada, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate among mental health issues which is estimated to be between 10-15% (National Initiative For Eating Disorders, 2023). It is estimated that 1 in 10 people will die from their eating disorder with suicide being the leading cause of death (Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna, 2023).

It is important to remember that eating disorders are not a choice.

Dieting puts individuals at a higher risk for developing eating disorders.
