65 Making Connections (IntroPSYC and SDG 17): Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

By Meghan E. Norris and Riley J.T. Bonar

Welcome to our unit on Social and Emotional Development. This is a unit where we explore topics such as the development of personality, attachment, and emotions. Children tend to thrive most when they are in warm, responsive, caring environments.

This unit lends itself well to connection with SDG16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. This goal promotes peaceful and inclusive societies, working towards all individuals feeling safe, and living free from violence, in all aspects of their lives.

Sustainable Development Goal 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Infographic. Conflict's deadly toll in 2024 resulted in nearly 50,000 lives lost. That is one life every 12 minutes.

Dr. Tom Hollenstein, a Developmental Psychologist at Queen’s University, applies research on social and emotional development to specifically support adolescents. He also works hard to develop a culture of inclusion in a high performing research lab. To learn more about how science is conducted in Dr. Hollenstein’s lab, we invite you to watch the optional below video:

Highlighting additional connections between our unit this week and research happening in the Department of Psychology at Queen’s University, Dr. Tara MacDonald, a Social Psychologist, studies attachment in the context of romantic relationships. Her collaborative work demonstrates the real-world impact of this research area—for example, recent work explored whether spousal attachment is related to the quality of post-deployment interactions and issues of conflict reported by spouses of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members during a post-deployment reunion.
