51 Making Connections (IntroPSYC and Health): Experiencing, Remembering, and Happiness
By Meghan E. Norris and Riley J.T. Bonar
Welcome to our unit dedicated entirely to memory. The role of memory is at the front of mind for many psychological scientists. For example, will use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) result in cognitive offloading? You now know that the better questions tied to this topic involve who, what, where, why, when, and how. Undoubtedly there will be times that AI can help, and hinder, memory. Research in this area is still growing, and we hope in the coming years, once we have a greater scientific understanding of the interactions between AI and memory, that we can pique your interest with a Making Connections on this topic.
In this Making Connections, we want to share an optional short video by Dr. Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel laureate, and the founder of behavioural economics. Carrying forward themes from previous units where we highlight that psychological science often goes by other names, we note that the founder of behavioural economics has a PhD in Psychology.
You will see the work of Dr. Kahneman throughout this course, particularly his work in collaboration with Dr. Amos Tversky in our unit on Judgment and Decision Making. In this optional video, Dr. Kahneman makes connections between our experiences and our memory in the context of happiness.
If you are looking to learn more about research happening on the topic of memory in Queen’s Psychology, we invite you to check out the work of Dr. Jordan Poppenk! Dr. Poppenk studies the consequences of bringing memories to life. His studies frequently incorporate monitoring of human brain activity with fMRI. Using computational methods, he tracks neural evidence of memory reactivation within participants’ brains, which he relates to other processes such as memory formation, forgetting, planning for the future, and perception.
