Introduction

Supporting Post-secondary English Language Learners (SPELL) is a joint project by Seneca College and Humber College funded by eCampusOntario.

This 12 hour professional development course is for post-secondary faculty who teach multilingual and multicultural students. It emphasizes essential strategies for supporting English language learners (ELLs) in written communication, oral interaction, presentations, reading course materials, and understanding lectures.

Gloria McPherson

 

 

 

Gloria McPherson, PhD Professor
Seneca College

Gloria McPherson has over 30 years of experience training teachers, and teaching English Language Learners. She has extensive experience authoring curriculum and materials for TESL, multi-level EAP Programs, ESP, International programs, and online courses. Additionally, she has co-authored several course books for Seneca College and Oxford University Press. She holds a Masters of Education  from Brock University and a PhD. in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning from OISE, University of Toronto. Her research interests include Intercultural Communication Competence, Sense of Community in online learning environments, and teacher development.

Catherine Dunn

 

 

 

Catherine Dunn, MA  Professor
Humber College

Catherine Dunn has been a professor in Humber’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program since 2012. In addition to her work with English Language Learners, she has extensive experience in teacher training for professors across disciplines. She holds a B.A. in English and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. She also holds a Master’s in Applied Linguistics from York University. Her research interests include Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in language programs with a particular focus on issues of gender and sexual identity.
