Understanding Belonging in Context

Our study aimed to explore experiences of belonging within SoTL and ISSOTL around the world. However, as discussed in our project background and context, most respondents were from North America, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The majority of our participants were from the United States (n=25) and Canada (n=20). You can find the geographic breakdown of our survey participants below.

The Institutional Context

Within these geographic contexts, we were curious about the institutional contexts in which our participants work. We learned that,

  •  The majority of the respondents were from a university context (n=49) and had 5 respondents from the college/polytechnic sector.
  •  Most of the respondents (n=38) were in a faculty role. Almost half of the respondents were in a teaching-focused faculty role (n=23), 12 were in an administrative faculty role, and 7 were in a research-focused faculty role. We had 8 respondents in a staff position, and 8 in the “other category.”
  • The fields represented were diverse and included sciences, humanities, higher education, educational technology, and others.
