This project was inspired by a robust and growing literature on SoTL identity and experiences of belonging. As a field, SoTL considers itself to be an inclusive space that is welcoming of all scholars regardless of disciplinary background, methodological tradition, or geo-cultural location. The research questions guiding this project emerged in response to our engagement with SoTL literature that both confirmed the openness of SoTL and/or revealed tensions or gaps within the vision of the “big tent.”

Within this chapter, you will find just some of the articles that were valuable resources for our thinking about belonging in SoTL generally and ISSOTL specifically. We invite you to click on each section of the accordion to see some of the excellent work related to belonging in SoTL. Each entry features a citation including a link where possible as well as a short description of the article should you wish to learn more. Resources have been featured in chronological rather than alphabetical order to highlight the evolution in scholarly thinking about a particular topic.

As you read through our recommendations for readings on related topics, you may want to reflect on how you personally connect to the experiences and perspectives recounted in this literature. To help you do this, each section includes prompts to help guide your reflection.
