Your Turn: Connecting with the Big Tent

The SoTL literature is replete with references to the “big tent” (Huber & Hutchings, 2005) as a shorthand for SoTL’s openness to, and inclusion of, scholars from diverse disciplines and geographic contexts. As Hewson and Easton (2022) have noted, however, tents can vary tremendously in their appearance and capacity. What do we actually mean when we talk about the “big tent”? What images do we each conjure, and how might they be similar or different Moreover, what do those shared or diverging features say about how we each understand and engage with SoTL?
