Belonging in SoTL and the “Big Tent”

Whether or not the term “belonging” is specifically referenced within SoTL literature, the concept remains prominent in the lexicon people draw on in talking about SoTL. Informal conversations with SoTL-enthusiasts often implicitly reference belonging when they talk about finding their place in SoTL, invoking phrases like, “I found my people.” Belonging in SoTL also figures in academic writing and presentations on SoTL, perhaps most prominently through the metaphor of the “big tent.” The idea of SoTL as a “big tent” that is open to, and inclusive of, all disciplines, methodologies, and research questions has structured how people have thought about SoTL for 20 years.
