Description

This module will focus on exposing you to the behind the scenes experiences in two different industries: country music and basketball. Starting in the country music scene, you will read about the journey of the Canadian sibling music duo The Reklaws and their rise to country music stardom through their interview with Billboard Canada. You will then watch a documentary style video which follows two front office staffers in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Learning Goals

By the end of the pre-readings for this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Identify various paths to get involved in the entertainment industry in Canada
  • Draw connections between brand identity and involvement as a performer in the Canadian music industry
  • Define how you can transition from university into sport management

Music and Authenticity in Branding

The Reklaws have a way of connecting all the genre-related idioms and can still write about beer, lost love, family, bar fights, and tractors with sincerity… The lyrics have a way of connecting generations and bridging the small victories and tragedy through melody and memory

King, 2022

The Reklaws’ popularity can be attributed at least in part to their ability to connect to their audience and build deep connections to their experience, similar to the recommendations of the readings around loyalty from last module.

Behind the Scenes

Now that you have learned a bit about The Reklaws, watch this short documentary below on the experience of two female front office staffers in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), Michelle Biskup of the Niagara River Lions and Marika Guerin of the Ottawa BlackJacks.
