7 Activity that supports high level domain knowledge

β€œThe task of the modern educators in not to cut down jungles but to irrigate desserts.”

– C. S. Lewis

‘Critical friend’ (critique) activity example

Many high level assignments which you have provided a rubric for would benefit from a ‘critical friend’ activity. Perhaps a laboratory procedure is important to all future work learners will be doing in your course. Learners can be presented with textbook readings of a demonstration in class or via video. Learners are then asked to develop a set of steps to complete procedure x/y/z. With the aid of a lab partner a learner can then complete the procedure while recording it to video. A critical friend (having completed the same background readings/review) can then watch the lab procedure to determine if results will be valid based on the procedure, stating why or why not. This information can then be shared back to their partner.

‘group development’ (compare/contract) activity example

Have each team of learners create a set of ‘team agreements’ and a plan to assure they are followed throughout the term. Have them share their approach to development with other groups. Each group can then compare/contract theirs to those of other teams and refine their agreements where beneficial.

‘Tackle a wicked problem’ (create) activity example

Learner can choose whichever ‘wicked problem’ that exists within their future profession that they choose. They will apply course concepts introduced, and new data determined to support it, to tackle the problem. They can present their approach in whichever form they are comfortable with (video pitch, poster, newspaper add, etc).
