Improvements to the Tim Nolan Testing Centre Space

The testing centre seating area was expanded from a small seating area outside the quiet and testing zone to a more welcoming and functional space with additional blue patterned chairs, lounge seating, a digital display screen, and a community whiteboard where students can sit, study, relax, or spend time between appointments.

Interactive whiteboards were introduced within the space to encourage creativity, self-expression, and peer connection. Students are invited to contribute artwork, reflections, and supportive messages that help foster an inclusive and welcoming environment. The first digital whiteboard features handwritten messages in red text reading “good luck marauders, you got this! #do not over-think it,” alongside several hand-drawn hearts. The second whiteboard includes spring-themed drawings of flowers and bees with handwritten phrases such as “Welcome Spring!” and “Every Flower Blooms Differently, Cherry blossoms do not compete with maple trees”.

The Zen Room was redesigned to create a cozier and calmer environment for students, featuring dim lighting, soft pink seating, floral wall artwork, a side table with a lamp and tissues, and a round wooden table with colouring sheets and markers. The space also includes comfortable furniture, a white noise machine, and wellness-focused elements that provide a quiet space to relax, decompress, or collect one’s thoughts.

Acoustic panelling was added around the telephone station to help reduce surrounding noise and create a quieter, more comfortable space for students who may benefit from lower-stimulation environments or additional privacy while making calls.

Through thoughtful and approachable touches throughout the space, such as a water dispenser with decorative googly eyes, Director Mei-Ju Shih and the SAS team aimed to create an atmosphere that feels less clinical and more inviting, helping students feel physically and emotionally supported while accessing services.

The Tim Nolan Testing Centre underwent spatial improvements to enhance the experience for students and instructors. The Testing Centre now features an improved service workflow, a welcoming lounge area with interactive walls, and a dedicated instructor test pick-up area. The new space has received many positive comments from students and instructors. It also supports interactive activities with students.

Opening of Annex @ CATS

The Annex @ CATS opened in February 2025. The Annex @ CATS expanded the Campus Accessible Technology Space with a dedicated sensory-friendly environment grounded in Snoezelen-inspired design principles. Developed to support sensory regulation, well-being, and focused study, the space quickly became a highly valued resource for students registered with CATS. Features include adjustable lighting, a bean bag chair, a weighted blanket, a bubble tube, and a range of fidget tools, creating a flexible environment that supports diverse sensory and learning needs.
